Rotork assists BAE Systems in naval base actuator upgrades

Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to upgrade a collection of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which function penstocks controlling movement of ships between the sea and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A series of A-range actuators had reached the tip of their operational life after long service in a challenging environment. Last chance wished to retain all the benefits of electrical actuators, so IQ3 actuators have been chosen. These needed to be specifically adapted by Rotork to overcome issues around confined areas and tough entry.
Restricted and IS gearboxes had been mechanically tailored so that both actuator and gearbox could possibly be manually operated without coming into the confined space. Rotork designed particular hand auto levers and through drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to get rid of the need for confined space entry.
Actuators within the IQ vary are watertight, providing ingress protection to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have an advanced twin stacked show with configurable data logger performance, and an absolute place sensor supplies reliability and accuracy.
